Humanness of Human Beings

We all fall short at times.
I am of no exception.

Today I was at the end of a conversation with a client when my other phone rang. It was a potential client who was interested in sitting services for her 4 kitties.Having the prior client on my mind and while finishing up notations on their work sheet, I was carrying on a conversation with the potential. In the process, I quoted her; I quoted her the price I was charging a regular client (kitties that live a block away) who notes were literally in front of my eyes.

Writing out my Route for tomorrow I am careful to look through all my notations and get together any paperwork that will be needed for a meet and greet. Upon doing this I realized my error and decided to call the lady right away to not only confirm our meeting, but to explain my mistake in the quote which was by a few dollars.

I explained that if it was a hardship we could potentially work something out, but she could not hear me. Instead she scolded me like a child, and frankly yelled at me. I remained calm and explained that it was my error and that while I rarely flub, this time I had and to please excuse me for such. I also told her to take a day and think about if she really wanted me to come. She then told me I was the same rate as her vet which really is no comparison to sitting.

No matter what I said to this woman, I could not get across what I wanted to say... I am human.

It is great to think about our furry friends and how forgiving they are of us. How they accept and love us in spite of our error, in spite of our humanness.

Perhaps that is the biggest lesson they have to teach us and to show us compassion even when we feel the other does not deserve it. I did not have to show compassion, and it was very hard to while being yelled at, but I know that in the end it will serve us both better than the alternative.
